Molly over at Psyched to be in 2nd is hosting a great linky party. She is asking everyone to share ideas for the first day of school. Even though I have been teaching for 24 years, I am always looking for that next great new idea. So, here are a couple of ideas I use the first day of school.
1. I read aloud The Crayon Box That Talked. This is a great discussion starter about how our differences make our class special. It leads right into talking about Multiple Intelligences and the different ways we are each smart. I believe this is extremely important for my students since I've taught struggling readers for the last four years. They so need to understand that they are smart and wonderful and have much to contribute to our classroom.
2. We begin establishing procedures and expectations on the first morning. One part of that is making sure that my little ones understand exactly what I expect from them. We talk about what our principal would see if she walked in and everyone was meeting an expectation. For example, one of our exectations is I Will Be A Learner. We have a class discussion about what it looks like and what it sounds like. I add their descriptions to the poster display and then role play. Here is what a poster might look like when finished.
